"The Toy Soldier and the Ballerina"
I originally wrote this short story for my college class called "Writing for Children and Adolescents." It has been edited many times since then, but maintains the same strong story line. This particular story is about how we can all develop talents, but there are other moral lessons scattered throughout the story as well. I wanted to write a story that teaches a good lesson, but is not explicit in its teaching--I wanted to make sure that my story would be entertaining, above all else. I am choosing to include this writing sample in my portfolio because I think it accurately reflects my writing style, and I just really love this story!
"Freddie the Yeti Battles the Dark"
"Freddie the Yeti" was the first story I wrote for my "Writing for Children and Adolescents" class two years ago. It is a proposed picture book, and it was so much fun to write. I wanted my story to be about a common problem, but with a different approach, so my story is about a little yeti who finds an unusual solution to his terrifying problem—fear of the dark.
Style Guide
abelei
This is a style guide that I wrote for abelei, a company that provides flavors for clients all around the world. Because abelei supplies flavors internationally, this style guide was written with the hope that it will give the company a guide with which they can better communicate with non-English speaking clients. Their website contained many inconsistencies and had much room for improvement, so this guide is meant to lessen potential confusion and make it easier for non-English speakers to understand the company's services and goals.
I was required to include thirty items in the style guide, ten of which were focused on catering to an international audience, using principles of global English. It was to include a table of contents containing clearly labeled and numbered sections that help users of the guide navigate through it and know where to look.
Personal Response Paper
"What Makes an Editor Great"
I wrote this essay in response to a prompt focused on if I think I can become a good editor, what exactly that entails, and how my personal experiences have helped me understand what a good editor does. This essay was written for university students and potential employers, making them aware of what I think editing requires and how I meet those requirements. I was to include three quotes that supported my findings and a works cited page, and the essay was limited to four pages.
